Ranked as one of the top waterfalls in Indiana by Visit Indiana, Thistlethwaite Falls in Richmond is a must-see attraction offering a scenic blend of natural beauty, history, and outdoor adventure. In the early 1800s, industrialist Timothy Thistlethwaite redirected the West Fork of the Whitewater River by blasting through bedrock to create a channel that would power his sawmill. The result is the stunning waterfall that now bears his name – a man-made marvel shaped by natural forces over time. Today, Thistlethwaite Falls is especially popular with visitors interested in fossil hunting in Indiana. The limestone rock formations surrounding the falls are rich with ancient marine fossils, offering a unique hands-on experience for geology enthusiasts and curious explorers of all ages. Located just south of Waterfall Road, near Springwood Park, the falls are easily accessible by a short, scenic hiking trail. Free to visit and open year-round, this site is a favorite among families, photographers, hikers, and anyone seeking one of Indiana’s most unique outdoor attractions. Whether you’re looking for a peaceful nature walk, an educational fossil-finding expedition, or a picturesque photo op, Thistlethwaite Falls in Richmond is the perfect destination.
